Hi, I’m Steven Rash

I have been a band director in Texas now for fifteen years, and been teaching for seventeen total! Currently the Director of Bands at Odem High School, I’ve been writing drill for my bands for nearly a decade at this point. Recently others have reached out to me looking for great drill designs, and I am now offering my services!

My bands have had great successes as a 3A school district, having been to the UIL State Marching Band twice with my designs, and four times as an Area Finalist in those years! We’ve also placed in Class 1A at the 2018 BOA Super-Regional Competition, and first place at the West Houston BOA in 2022. I’m familiar with what judges in Texas are looking for, and am currently a provisional member of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association for Marching Band, and a Full Active Member for Concert Band Adjudicators.

My groups have had the distinction of numerous State Level appearances in the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series Competition and TMEA Honor Band Competition. In 2014 under my direction the OJH Symphonic Winds were chosen as the State Runner Up in the OPS Concert March Selection. Most recently the Odem HS Wind Ensemble placed 8th in the Finals of the TMEA 3A State Honor Band Contest. I led the Odem High School Wind Ensemble to a well received  performance at Carnegie Hall in June of 2016.

I earned my Bachelors of Science Degree in Music Education from a joint program with Case Western Reserve University and The Cleveland Institute of Music in Cleveland, Ohio. There I studied conducting under Dr. Gary Ciepluch, and jazz under Paul Ferguson. I studied my primary instrument of flute with Katheryne DeJongh and saxophone with Grammy Nominated Saxophonist Gregory Banaszak. I have performed with a number of college and community bands over the years. Currently I perform as principal flute of The Corpus Christi Wind Symphony.

A native of Farmington, NM, I enjoy returning annually as a faculty member at Hummingbird Music Camp in Jemez Springs, NM. I have previously taught in Aztec, NM and student taught in Chardon, OH.

Currently I am a member of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association(TMAA), serve as Region Secretary for ATSSB Region XIV, have served as past Middle School Region Coordinator for the region, and hold TMEA, TBA, and ATSSB memberships.
